As Bonnie Tu has retired from her position as the chairperson at the end of the year, the top brass of Taiwan’s largest bicycle manufacturer Giant Group sees some changes going into 2025, with Young Liu taking over as chairman and Phoebe Liu being promoted to CEO as per January 1st.
Thanks to her key role in building the YouBike public bicycle sharing system and the LIV women’s brand, Bonnie Tu has set some milestones in the history of the Giant Group. During her more than three-decade tenure with Taiwan’s largest bicycle manufacturer there have been other noteworthy achievements: In 1994 Bonnie Tu successfully led Giant’s IPO as the Group’s CFO. She also has driven the group’s digital transformation and strategically established manufacturing facilities in first Hungary and and then Vietnam after taking over as chairperson in 2017. Last but not least Giant Group’s annual turnover grew to a record NT$ 92 billion under her lead in 2022.
Bonnie Tu’s stint as chairperson of the Giant Group ended on December 31 2024. Following her retirement, Tu will continue to serve on the board of directors, providing valuable guidance to the new management team. “As a publicly listed company, the rejuvenation, sustainable development, and succession planning of Giant Group have always been my top priorities,” stated Bonnie Tu. “While working on my personal memoirs this year, I formulated the plan to retire. It is my sincere hope that the new management team will bring fresh perspectives and renewed energy to the company. I have complete confidence in the newly appointed leadership team to steer Giant Group towards a prosperous future!”
Taking over as Giant Group’s chairman is Young Liu who has been serving as the company’s CEO since 2017. Starting in the early 90ies of the 20th century Liu had been playing a key role in expanding the industrial footprint of the Giant Group in the People’s Republic of China and establishing the Giant and LIV brands on China’s market. As CEO Young Liu has overseen Giant Group’s global sales and operational development, leveraging his extensive industry expertise and acute understanding of the global bicycle market. Most recently, he has been instrumental in establishing the Bicycling Alliance for Sustainability (BAS), demonstrating unwavering commitment to advancing ESG initiatives throughout the global bicycle industry.
As for the newly appointed CEO, Phoebe Liu entered the Giant Group in 2005. After a stint as Export Sales Manager at the Kunshan Factory in China she served as Executive Assistant to Young Liu from 2010, facilitating the coordination of production and sales in the Chinese factories. In 2015, Liu returned to Giant Group’s global headquarters to oversee worldwide Point of Sale (POS) operations. Since 2017, she has held the dual role of Chief Branding Officer and Head of Global Gear Business. With twenty years in various positions of the Giant Group, Phoebe Liu has laid a solid foundation of practical industry experience and expertise. Through her close collaboration with Young Liu for more than a decade, the two have built up a very strong working synergy – which will be welcome to navigate the challenging conditions that the bicycle industry has been facing as of late.
